[NI0003] Benny L. Huffman, 74, of Peoria, died at 6:20 a.m. January 21, at Farmington Continental Manor Nursing Home where he was a resident.

Born November 17, 1907, in Fulton County, he was the son of Samuel and Cora Howerter Huffman. He first married Marguerite Thrasher January 7, 1928. He then married Della Hodges (sic) Van Pelt December 22, 1961 in Bartonville. She died June 6, 1974. He is survived by one son, Benny Jan Huffman of Newton Center, Massachusetts; one stepson, Richard Van Pelt of Valparaiso, Indiana; two brothers, Clyde Huffman of Bushnell and Bernie Huffman of Canton, one sister, Mrs. Hazel Gran of Cuba, three grandchildren and one step-grandchild. He was preceded in death by two sisters and his first wife.

Mr. Huffman graduated from Western Illinois State Teachers College in Macomb and taught school in Peoria, St. David and Canton for 38 years. He retired from teaching in 1964. He sold cotton candy in the area for many years. He was a member of Masonic Lodge 104 AF&AM of Lewistown; Peoria Consistory, Mohammed Temple Shrine; Eagles Lodge; Moose Lodge, Bald Eagles; and the American Association for Retired Persons.

Services were Saturday at the American Mausoleum with the Rev. Ken Yocum officiating. Endsley and Hines Funeral Home, Bartonville Chapel, was in charge of arrangements. (Obituary)

[NI0012] Jeanne was a Lieutenant in the Army Nurse Corps in WWII, stationed in California.

[NI0031] His family tree dating back to the 1700's was put together by one of the cousins who as of the 1990's lives in California for the Carson family reunion held in Ohio in the early 1990's.

[NI0073] Cuba - Samuel L. Huffman, 83, of Cuba, died at Graham Hospital in Canton at 4:55 a.m. Sunday. He had been ill about three months. He was born near Smithfield Jan. 4, 1876, a son of James and Catherine Paul Huffman. He married Cora E. Howerter in 1995. She died in 1947. He then married Alice Branson. She survives. Also surviving are three sons, Clyde of Prairie City, Benny of Peoria, and Burnette of Canton; tow daughters, Mrs. Mamie Beaird of Macomb, Mrs. Hazel gray of Cuba; tow brothers, William of St. Petersburg, Fla., and Harry of Bushnell; nine grandchildren and ten great grandchildren. He was preceded in deatth by a daughter, a granddaughter, four brothers, and one sister.

Mr. Huffman had lived here for three years and previously had farmed in the vicinity. He belonged to Masonic Lodge 534 of Cuba. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Hukill Funeral Cahpel here, conducted by the Rev. C. W. Martin of Pearson. Burial will be in Bushnell Cemetery. Friends may call a the funeral chapel after noon today, and the family will meet friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Cuba Masonic lodge will conduct graveside services. (Obituary)

[NI0074] Lyle "Bernie" Huffman, 76, of Canton, formerly of Bushnell, died at 9:10 a.m. Saturday, August 22, 1987, in Graham Hospital. He was born November 7, 1910, in Fulton County, a son of Sam and Cora Howerter Huffman.

He retired from Consolidated Coal Co. in Norris in 1971. He was a member of the Morning Star Lodge 734 and the UMWA local. He was also a member of the South Park United Methodist Church in Canton. He married Adriennne E. Cox November 17, 1934, in Macomb. She survives. Also surviving are a daughter, Bernita Hammond of Bushnell; a granddaughter; a brother, Clyde Huffman of Bushnell; and a sister, Hazel Gray of Cuba. He was preceded in death by a brother and two sisters.

Services were held at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday in Murphy-Sedgwick Memorial Home in Canton, the Rev. Eric Bruster officiated. Burial was in Bushnell Cemetery. A memorial in his name was established for the South Park United Methodist Church. (Obituary)

[NI0075] Clyde H. Huffman, 83, of Bushnell, died Friday, May 13, 1988, at McDonough District Hospital. He was born February 17, 1905, in Cass Township, Fulton County, a son of Samuel C. and Cora Howerter Huffman. He operated the Macomb Dairy for several years and farmed in Walnut Grove Township for 38 years before retiring to Bushnell in 1965. He was a member of the McDonough County Farm Bureau.

He married Bessie Buffum November 14, 1927, in Keokuk Iowa. She died November 28, 1986. Surviving are one son, Sam of Good Hope, one daughter, Doloris Gress of Mesquite, NM; five grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and one sister, Hazel Grey (sic) of Cuba. He was preceded in death by his wife; one son, Robert; two brothers, Lyle and Benny; and two sisters, Mary Beaird and Elva Varner.

Cremation rites have been accorded. Graveside service will be held at 11:00 am. today (Wednesday) in Bushnell Cemeter, the Rev. Alan Newhall officiating. Martin-Hollis Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. Memorials may be made to the Bushnell Rescue Squad. (Obituary)

[NI0076] Mrs. Mary G., (Mamie) Beaird, 73, of 532 S. McArthur, Macomb, died at McDonough District Hospital at 7 p.m. Saturday. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Christian Church with the Rev. Cecil Swindle officiating. Burial will be in the Bushnell cemetery.

Mrs. Beaird was injuured in a headon collision on Route 9 Thursday evening. She received severe chest injuries, bruises and abrasions. The accident occurred during a rainstorm about a mile west of Bushnell. Dell d. Miller, 19, Bushnell, driver of the other auto involved in the crash, was also admitted to the hospital for treatment of injuries.

Mrs. Beaird was born Nov. 11, 1895 at Smithfield, Ill. to Samuel and Cora Howerter Huffman. She liived most of her adult life on a farm near Macomb. Mrs. Beaird was married to Ross W. Beaird Aug. 28, 1912. Her parenta and husband are deceased.

She was a member of the Christian Church, Tri-State, Macomb Order of Eastern Star and the Progressive Class of the Christian Church Sunday School.

Survivors include one daughter, Mrs. C. O. (Lilabelle) (sic) Trayulor of Decatur; two sons, L. Gerald Beaird of Highland and Keith B. Beaird of Mattoon; three brothers, Clyde Huffman of Bushnell, Benny Huffman of Peoria, and Burnette Huffman of Canton; one sister, Mrs. Harold Gray of Cuba, Ill; seven grandchildren, six great grandchildrean and several nieces and nephews. One sister, Mrs. Elva Varner, preceeded her in death.

Friends may call at Dodsworth-Piper-Wallen Chapel. Visitation with the family will be from 7 to 9 p.m. this evening.

[NI0077] Cuba - Hazel M. Gray, 95, of 317 S. 3rd St., in Cuba, died at her home at 8 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 6, 1997. She was born Nov. 15, 1902 at Smithfield to Samuel L. and Cora E. (Howerter) Huffman. She married Harold O. Gray at Cuba on April 17, 1920. He died Dec. 20, 1970. She is survived by two nephews, Sam Huffman of Good Hope and Jan Huffman of [Newton] Upper Falls, Massl; three nieces, Ruth Thomson of Winter Haven, Flal, Lila Belle Taylor (sic) of Decatur and Bernitta (sic) Trigg of Canton. She was also preceded in death by a daughter, Helen Louise Gray; three brothers; and two sisters.

Mrs. Gray was a homemaker, a member of the Cuba United Methodist Church and formerly a member of various Cuba card clubs. Services are 11 a.m. Tuesday at the Henry Memorial Home in Cuba with the Rev. Randy McGeehon officiating. Burial will be in the Cuba cemetery. Visitation will be held at the Memorial Home one hour prior to services. Memorial contributions are suggested to the Cuba Senior Citizens Center. (Obituary)

[NI0081] Cuba - Harold O. Gray, 72, Cuba, died at 10:30 a.m. Sunday in Graham Hospital following an illness of three years. Born in Fulton County, Jan. 2, 1898, to Marion and Elba (Deakin) Gray, he married Hazel Huffman in Cuba, April 17, 1920. She survives. Also surviving are several nieces and nephews. A daughter, a sister and a brother died earlier.

Mr. Gray was a maintenance supervisor for the Illinois Division of Highways and was Republican precinct committeeman for Cass Township and treasurer of the Fulton County Republican Party.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday in the Hukill Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Dan Buck officiating. Burial will be in the Cuba Cemetery. (Obituary)

[NI0082] Helen Louise, little daughter of Harold and Hazel (Huffman) Gray was born near Cuba, Jan. 18, 1921, died Dec. 18, 1925, aged 4 years and 11 months.

She was an exceedingly bright child, but had been physically afflicted since birth. Although she was a great sufferer she always had a pleasant smile and an answer for everyone. Helen was entered on the cradle roll of the United Brethren Church of Smithfield when but a few months old.

Funeral services were conducted at the home Sunday afternoon, Jan. 20, by the Rev. J. E. Sibert. Interment was in the Cuba Cemetery.

[NI0083] Bushnell - Bessie C. Huffman, 73, of 355 Washington St. died at 12:15 p.m. Friday at McDonough District Hospital, Macomb. Born June 3, 1909 near Cuba to Curtis and Effie Mae Wheeler Buffum, she married Clyde H. Huffman Nov. 14, 1927, in Keokuk, Iowa.

Surviving are her husband, one daughter, Mrs. Doloris Gress of Mesquite, N.M.; a son, Sam of Good Hope; five grandchildren; two brothers, Carroll Buffum of Canton, and Ernest Buffum of LaGernia, Texas, and one sister, Marjorie Jones of Canton. She was preceded in death by one son, three brothers and two sisters.

She and her husband retired from their farm in the Walnut Grove area and moved to Bushnell in 1965. She was a member of Bushnell TOPS Club for 21 years and Four-Square Household Science Club. In 1965 she was selected Bushnell Mother of the year. She was a member of Bushnell Methodist Church.

Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Monday at Martin-Hollis Funeral Home. Visitation will be after 2 p.m. Sunday until time of services. Burial will be in Bushnell Cemetery. A memorial has been established for the Bushnell Rescue Squad. (Obituary)

Bessie received the "Mother of the Year" Award twice in Bushnell, Illinois.

[NI0084] Robert R. Huffman, 52, of 926 N. Dean died at 2:40 p.m. yesterday at McDonough District Hospital, Macomb. Born Nov. 16, 1929, in McDonough County, a son of Clyde H. and Bessie C. Buffum Huffman, he married June Kirby Aug. 14, 1965, in Walnut Grove.

He retired from the U.S. Postal Service in 1980. He served in the Arrmy and Air Force and was a member of Bushnell Independent Order of Oddfellows and Bushnell Masonic Lodge.

Surviving are his wife, his parents of Bushnell; one daughter, Marilyn, one son, Samuel Clyde, both at home; one brother, Sam of Bushnell; one sister, Doloris Gress of Bellflower, Calif.; and several nieces and nephews.

Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at Martin-Hollis Funeral Home. Burial will be in Bushnell Cemetery, with VFW military services. Visitation will be after 2 p.m. tomorrow at the funeral home, with the family present from 7 to 9. Oddfellow services will be at 7. Memorials may be made to American Heart Association. (Obituary)

[NI0161] Mrs. Cora Etta Huffman, wife of Sam Huffman of Bushnell, died at the St, Francis hospital here yesterday afternoon after an extended illness. Funeral sedrvices will be held Monday afternoon at the Methodist church in Bushnell, the Rev. C. W. Martin of Bluford, Ill, asssisted by the Rev. Kenneth Knox of Bushnell, officiating.

Mrs. Huffman was born April 20, 1877, in Fulton county, to Benjamin and Mary Slock Howater (sic), and had lived in Bushnell a number of years. Surviving in addition to her husband are six sons and daughters: Clyde Huffman of Prairie City, Mrs. Ross Beaird of Macomb, Mrs. Ross Varner of Bushnell, Mrs. Harold Gray of Cuba, Benny Huffman of Peoria and Burnette Huffman of Canton.

Friends may call at the residence, 907 North Rile Street, Bushnell, after 7:00 o'clock this evening. (Obituary)

[NI0164] Doloris Cassell Gress, 62, of Mesquite, New Mexico, a former Bushnell resident, died Wednesday, May 8, 1991 at the home of a daughter in Anthony, New Mexico. She was born June 2, 1928 near Wanlut Grove to Clyde and Bessie Buffum Huffman.

She graduated in 1946 from Bushnell High School as valedictorian of the class. She was also homecoming queen that year. She first married Eddie Cassel, June 13, 1947 in Bushnell. She later married Clarence Gress. Surviving are one son, Ronnie Cassell of Temple, Texas, two daughters, Diane Sturgeon of Great Falls, Virginia and Cynthia Myers of Anthony, New Mexico; six grandchildren; one great-grandchild, and one brother, Sam Huffman of Good Hope. She was preceded in death by one brother, Robert Huffman.

Graveside services for the cremated remaains was held Tuesday in the Bushnell Cemetery. The Rev. Alan Newhall officiated. Martin-Hollis Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements. (Obituary)

She left her three children with her parents, Clyde & Bessie, who raised them. According to Lila Belle Beaird, Doloris's ashes are buried with Clyde & Bessie.
